{"id":40024,"date":"2026-08-21T09:52:29","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T14:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=40024"},"modified":"2026-08-21T09:52:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T14:52:29","slug":"postal-service-says-there-is-no-place-for-nepotism-at-usps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2026\/08\/21\/postal-service-says-there-is-no-place-for-nepotism-at-usps\/","title":{"rendered":"Postal Service Says &#8216;There is no place for nepotism at USPS&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From USPS News Link &#8211; 8\/21\/26<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sub-head\"><em>Federal regulations prohibit favoritism in hiring, promotions<\/em><\/h2>\n<div class=\"entry-meta\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Postal Service is marking USPS Ethics Awareness Week by reminding employees that nepotism is prohibited in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under federal law, USPS employees cannot hire, promote or advocate for a relative \u2014 including a spouse, parent, child, sibling, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew, in-law, stepparent, stepsibling or half-sibling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reporting relationship can also raise ethics concerns. For example, an employee is not permitted to report directly to a spouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no such prohibition between other relatives, friends or unmarried romantic partners, but to avoid the perception of favoritism, higher-level employees in such reporting relationships should generally recuse themselves from taking actions affecting the private gain of the lower-level employees, such as promotions, overtime, discipline, leave requests, detail assignments or change-of-domicile requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reporting relationships between relatives, friends or romantic partners can affect the workplace environment in ways that go beyond ethics regulations.
