Ossoff Launches Inquiry into Employee Deaths at USPS Facility in Palmetto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Four USPS employees have died at the facility since it opened in 2024<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Palmetto, Ga.\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 6\/12\/26 &#8211; U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is launching an inquiry into employee deaths at Georgia\u2019s Palmetto postal facility.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Sen. Ossoff\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/26.06.12_USPS-Palmetto-Death.pdf\">launched an inquiry<\/a>\u00a0with U.S. Postal Service Postmaster General David Steiner into employee deaths at the\u00a0Atlanta Regional Processing and Distribution Center in Palmetto, where\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/news\/local\/palmetto-usps-distribution-center-worker-dies\/85-605c1af8-969a-4384-ad5a-0558eb6c27d6\">four employees have died<span class=\"sr-only\">This is an external link<\/span><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i><\/a>\u00a0since it opened in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>According to local reporting and employee accounts, postal workers have continually reported difficulty making calls inside of the facility in the event of emergency situations, poor working conditions, and management struggles.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/atlanta\/news\/employee-dies-at-troubled-metro-atlanta-usps-mail-distribution-center-officials-say\/\">an audit by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG)<span class=\"sr-only\">This is an external link<\/span><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i><\/a>\u00a0last year detailed \u201cinsufficient supervision and a poor employee work culture\u201d at the Palmetto facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I inspected the facility in May 2024, staff reported similar issues, including lack of cell phone service inside the facility, and I\u2019m concerned that these same complaints persist,\u201d<strong>\u00a0Sen. Ossoff wrote to Postmaster General Steiner.<\/strong>\u201cPostal workers are working hard to deliver the mail and deserve safe working conditions and proper management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One USPS employee at the Palmetto facility\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsbtv.com\/news\/local\/4-deaths-2-years-usps-facility-workers-demand-answers\/7H276A46CFA6RIPJK5U5P3LBCQ\/\">told local media<span class=\"sr-only\">This is an external link<\/span><i class=\"fas fa-external-link-alt\"><\/i><\/a>\u00a0that \u201cWe haven\u2019t had any phone service since we came to that building,\u201d and that \u201cSomeone\u2019s house had burned down to the ground and they didn\u2019t even know it until we went on break. Another employee\u2019s child was in a very bad car accident and wasn\u2019t able to be reached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of his inquiry, Sen. Ossoff requested more information about how USPS will address workers\u2019 concerns, what progress USPS has made implementing recommendations from the OIG report, and a comparison of workplace safety standards with other regional processing and distribution standards.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ossoff continues working to hold the Postal Service accountable to deliver for Georgia families.<\/p>\n<p>Last May, following the resignation of former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, Sen. Ossoff\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-pressing-for-competent-postmaster-general-to-solve-georgia-mail-delays\/\">urged the USPS Board of Governors<\/a>\u00a0to replace him with leadership who can solve the continued delays with on-time mail delivery across Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Last January, after receiving reports from Georgia veterans that the U.S. Postal Service is failing to deliver prescriptions and appointment notices on time, hurting their access to benefits and care, Sen. Ossoff\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/press-releases\/sen-ossoff-launches-inquiry-into-mail-delays-impacting-georgia-veterans\/\">demanded<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0USPS\u00a0swiftly delivers prescriptions, medications, and VA appointment notices to Georgia veterans.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ossoff.senate.gov\/press-releases\/watch-sen-ossoff-presses-usps-postmaster-general-under-oath-amid-lengthy-delays-at-palmetto-distribution-center\/\">Sen.
