He thanked board members for coming into town earlier in the week for their strategy session. This session helps board members bond and prepares them to handle the tough issues facing the organization.

Rapoza also thanked the National Office staff. “We’ve worked through a lot at the national level,” he said. The three management associations continue to work together and have a good relationship.

He pointed out this year’s Leadership Conference program has been condensed by one day, helping to save costs. “We know what needs to be done,” he declared, “now we need to do it. I look forward to a fruitful two days.”

Secretary-Treasurer Ruthie Cauble reminded board members she is passionate about her role as overseer of NAPUS’ finances. Director of Government Relations Bob Levi outlined NAPUS’ legislative concerns: postal relief, postal health benefits, retirement benefits and a debt deal. He brought everyone up to speed on critical postal legislation being considered on Capitol Hill. Executive Director Charlie Moser told everyone they all are membership chairs and need to sell NAPUS as best they can.

Board members heard about an exciting development to NAPUS’ website: a new knowledge base. It will feature Postmaster John Galera’s PM Survival Disk, allowing Postmasters to search using key words and download pertinent information. It also will allow users to make comments and, with the resulting user-modified data, help create a better system.

Another feature will be NAPUS training videos intended to be used in the field. These virtual classrooms will help NAPUS in its endeavor to continue offering much-needed training to its members. The new knowledge base should be live around mid- to late April. More detailed information will be available in the Gazette and on the NAPUS website.

The Executive Board will be back to work Saturday morning; Sunday will be busy with chapter officer breakout sessions. The General Business Session will get under way Monday morning, with featured speakers USPS Board of Governors Chairman Thurgood Marshall Jr., Postal Regulatory Commission Chairman Ruth Goldway and Postmaster General Pat Donahoe.

President Bob Rapoza opened Friday morning’s Executive Board meeting by saying he thought his first term as national president was tough, but it was nothing compared to the first three months of this year.
