WASHINGTON\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 1\/15\/26 – Representative Dale Strong, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, has secured an evaluation of the United States Postal Service\u2019s (USPS) consolidation of Huntsville\u2019s processing and distribution center \u2013 a move that has disrupted mail service across North Alabama.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0provision\u00a0was included in\u00a0H.R.\u00a07006<\/strong>,\u00a0the Financial Services and General Government Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bill, which advanced as part of\u00a0the\u00a0appropriations package\u00a0passed earlier this week.\u00a0It will require\u00a0USPS\u00a0to\u00a0provide a briefing\u00a0on the impacts of\u00a0consolidating\u00a0the Huntsville processing and distribution center, including\u00a0its\u00a0impact on mail service to North Alabama.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Postal Service\u2019s short-sighted decision to strip Huntsville of its processing and distribution center has failed North Alabama communities,\u201d said\u00a0Representative Strong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Congress\u00a0remains\u00a0deeply concerned\u00a0about the negative impacts of\u00a0consolidation, including degraded\u00a0mail service,\u00a0declining\u00a0customer satisfaction, and cost overruns.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis consolidation has led to delays, inefficiencies, and frustration for my constituents, and\u00a0I will continue\u00a0pressing USPS for answers and accountability,\u201d\u00a0said Strong.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strong\u00a0has\u00a0long\u00a0raised concerns about\u00a0USPS\u00a0delays and operational failures\u00a0following the\u00a0Huntsville\u00a0consolidation.\u00a0In May 2024, he authored a\u00a0letter<\/a>\u00a0to the Postmaster General urging USPS to reinvest in a North Alabama-based processing and distribution center and\u00a0reverse decisions that have weakened service for residents and businesses.<\/p>\n

Separately,\u00a0Strong\u00a0also\u00a0secured\u00a0a provision directing USPS to conduct an internal assessment of inaccurate address listings and overlapping\u00a0zip code designations, including\u00a0the long-standing issues\u00a0affecting Priceville, Alabama, which lacks its own unique zip code.<\/p>\n

H.R.\u00a07006\u00a0<\/strong>now awaits consideration in the Senate before\u00a0being sent\u00a0to the President\u2019s desk to be signed into law.<\/p>\n
