{"id":36607,"date":"2024-10-23T16:01:02","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T21:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=36607"},"modified":"2024-10-23T16:01:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T21:01:02","slug":"federal-indictment-charges-man-with-assaulting-and-robbing-two-postal-carriers-in-chicago-suburb-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2024\/10\/23\/federal-indictment-charges-man-with-assaulting-and-robbing-two-postal-carriers-in-chicago-suburb-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal Indictment Charges Man with Assaulting and Robbing Two Postal Carriers in Chicago Suburb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text-align-justify\">CHICAGO \u2014 10\/23\/24 &#8211; A federal grand jury has indicted a man for allegedly assaulting and robbing two U.S. Postal Service carriers in a Chicago suburb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">DEVAN FLAX, 21, of Chicago, assaulted and robbed a postal carrier on Nov. 25, 2023, and another on Nov. 28, 2023, in Forest Park, Ill., according to an indictment returned in U.S. District Court in Chicago.\u00a0 Flax robbed the carriers of a U.S. Postal Service key, the indictment states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The indictment also accuses Flax of robbing an employee of a Berwyn, Ill. pizzeria on Nov. 26, 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">Flax is currently detained in law enforcement custody.\u00a0 He was arraigned on Oct. 16, 2024, in federal court in Chicago and pleaded not guilty to assault, robbery, and firearm charges.\u00a0A status hearing is set for Nov. 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey I. Cummings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The indictment was announced by Morris Pasqual, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and\u00a0Ruth Mendon\u00e7a, Inspector-in-Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.\u00a0 Substantial assistance was provided by the Chicago Police Department, Forest Park, Ill. Police Department, and Lombard, Ill. Police Department.\u00a0 The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brandon Stone and Simar Khera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">\u201cU.S. Postal Service employees\u00a0delivering mail to the American people must be allowed to do so safely and securely,\u201d said Acting U.S. Attorney Pasqual.\u00a0 \u201cIndividuals who use violence against postal carriers to gain access to the public&#8217;s mail must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">\u201cThis indictment is another example of the roles Postal Inspectors and our law enforcement partners play in protecting Postal Service employees and customers,\u201d\u00a0said Inspector-in-Charge Mendon\u00e7a.\u00a0 \u201cAs Postal Service employees continue to play an integral role in our communities, we are clear in our resolve to aggressively investigate anyone who brings harm to these invaluable public servants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The public is reminded that an indictment is not evidence of guilt.\u00a0 The defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/j495.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-33705\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/j495-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/j495-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/j495-30x30.jpg 30w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO \u2014 10\/23\/24 &#8211; A federal grand jury has indicted a man for allegedly assaulting and robbing two U.S. Postal Service carriers in a Chicago suburb.
