{"id":36378,"date":"2024-09-25T17:18:18","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T22:18:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=36378"},"modified":"2024-09-25T17:18:18","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T22:18:18","slug":"georgia-nalc-sends-letter-calling-trump-existential-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2024\/09\/25\/georgia-nalc-sends-letter-calling-trump-existential-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia NALC Sends Letter Calling Trump \u2018Existential Threat\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The following is a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/25\/exclusive-postal-union-sends-letter-calling-trump-existential-threat\/\">The Federalist<\/a> &#8211; we cannot respond to questions or comments regarding this article.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h1 class=\"title-lg\">EXCLUSIVE: Postal Union Sends Letter Calling Trump \u2018Existential Threat<\/h1>\n<p><strong>9\/25\/24- <\/strong>Article by:\u00a0Logan Washburn<strong> &#8211; The\u00a0union\u2019s Georgia (NALC) president, whose name appears at the bottom of the letter, claims it was sent without his permission: \u2018I had no idea they were sending out a letter with my name.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If former President Donald Trump wins November\u2019s election, he would pose an \u201cexistential threat\u201d \u2014 at least according to a letter apparently from the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), obtained by The Federalist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Donald Trump wins the upcoming election, it could prove an existential threat to our union and our contract,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cYour vote matters: consider how the consequences could affect you, your job, and our union when deciding how to vote.\u201d [PEN: consider your family and how your finances have been for the past 4 years]<\/p>\n<p>The letter appears to be signed \u201cin solidarity\u201d by Georgia NALC President Don Griggs. It takes issue specifically with Trump and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/11\/democrats-continue-to-spew-lies-about-the-contents-of-project-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project 2025<\/a>, leftists\u2019 favorite catch-all bogeyman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDonald Trump and his allies have put together an extensive plan for the next year, if he takes office and appoints anti-union allies throughout the executive branch,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cOur union cannot afford to risk the proposals in Project 2025 becoming a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter claims Project 2025 would \u201cban all public employee unions and replace private-sector unions with company-controlled unions,\u201d \u201clet states opt out of federal overtime and minimum wage\u201d requirements, and repeal the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/laws-and-regulations\/laws\/dbra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Davis-Bacon Act<\/a>, which places wage requirements on government projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are members who don\u2019t like our union talking about politics,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThis year, however, the two are inextricably linked to the future of our union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/GA-NALC-Letter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36379\" Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), with whom the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nalc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NALC<\/a>\u00a0is affiliated, has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/betterinaunion.org\/harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endorsed<\/a>\u00a0Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her a \u201ckey partner in leading the most pro-labor administration in our lifetimes.\u201d The NALC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nalc.org\/news\/nalc-updates\/nalc-endorses-harris-walz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endorsed<\/a>\u00a0Harris on Sept. 12, saying that she \u201cwill work with NALC to address unique challenges facing letter carriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griggs told The Federalist the letter came not from him, but from the national union \u2014 without his permission.\u00a0\u201cThey told me they were going to send me some information as we got closer to the election, and I had no idea they were sending out a letter with my name,\u201d Griggs said. \u201cI never would have sent anything out like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he received the letter two to three days after others began talking about it.\u00a0\u201cI didn\u2019t see it until I got it myself,\u201d Griggs said. \u201cWhen people were calling me about it, I had no idea what they were talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griggs said he would have contacted the AFL-CIO about this if he \u201cknew how to get in touch with them.\u201d He said he thinks the national union should send messages from its own office, not state offices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have a problem with them sending out something to the membership, but as far as attaching my name to it without my permission, that was a different story,\u201d Griggs said. \u201cThey were trying to get a message out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter directs recipients to a page run by the AFL-CIO, containing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/betterinaunion.org\/project-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scare tactics<\/a>\u00a0about \u201cTrump\u2019s Project 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply concerned about pro-corporate policies that would drive up costs, put people out of work, endanger people\u2019s lives and make it harder for working people to get ahead,\u201d the website reads. \u201cNavigate the issues below to learn why the agenda detailed in Project 2025 would be catastrophic for working people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The web page goes on to explain Project 2025 relating to multiple issues like \u201cimmigration,\u201d \u201ccivil rights,\u201d and \u201cretirement security.\u201d It directs users to a portal where they can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/betterinaunion.org\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">register<\/a>\u00a0to vote.<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist reached out to AFL-CIO, but a representative did not comment in time for publication. An NACL representative also declined to connect The Federalist with anyone to comment on the record in time for publication.<\/p>\n<p><em>Logan Washburn is a staff writer covering election integrity.
