News 12<\/a> – 8\/31\/23 – Federal efforts are underway to put more Postal Police officers back on the street.<\/p>\n

Frank Albergo, president of the Postal Police Officers Association, says that heavily populated cities like Paterson would benefit from more Postal Police officers so that local police can focus on their jobs.<\/div>\n

\u201cLocal police, first of all, their resources are low, and they have so many other things to worry about. They can\u2019t devote their resources to mail theft, they just can\u2019t. You know who could do that? Postal Police. That\u2019s all we did, mail theft and the protection of employees,\u201d Albergo says.<\/div>\n

The United States Postal Service allowed Postal Police to patrol neighborhoods until 2020 when that practice stopped [USPS Inspection Service ended this practice].<\/div>\n

The bill would reverse a 2020 directive from the\u00a0Chief Postal Inspector\u00a0that shackled Postal Police Officers to physical postal locations and prevented officers from fully executing their duty to ensure public safety within the nation’s mail system.\u00a0Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-NJ)<\/strong>\u00a0joined Rep. Garbarino as an original cosponsor of the legislation.<\/p>\n

“Postal Police Officers serve a critical public safety role, but they have been kneecapped by a senseless\u00a0<\/em>directive, “said<\/i> Rep. Garbarino.<\/b>\u00a0“Since Postal Police have been confined to postal property, there has been a spike in mail theft and violence, including rising attacks against mail carriers. Postal Police must be given the freedom to combat crime within the mail system for the good of public safety. This bill will enhance public safety by removing current restrictions and empowering postal police to do their jobs.”<\/em><\/p>\n
