{"id":284,"date":"2009-04-23T09:42:52","date_gmt":"2009-04-23T14:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=284"},"modified":"2009-04-23T09:47:56","modified_gmt":"2009-04-23T14:47:56","slug":"us-postal-service-celebrates-earth-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2009\/04\/23\/us-postal-service-celebrates-earth-day\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Postal Service Celebrates Earth Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_285\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-285\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a class=\"highslide\" onclick=\"return vz.expand(this)\" href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/earth-day.gif\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-285\" title=\"earth-day\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/earth-day-150x150.gif\" alt=\"Earth Day 2009\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/strong><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Earth Day 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>April 22, 2009<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. Postal Service Celebrates Earth Day<br \/>\n<\/strong>Employees Recycle Thousands of Pounds of Small Electronics<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Postmaster General John Potter today launched a campaign to increase awareness and create results for energy conservation at a \u201cTurning Over a Green Leaf\u201d event in celebration of Earth Day.<\/p>\n<p>Building on its history of environmental innovation, and its goal of reducing energy use 30 percent by 2015, the Postal Service is working to create a culture of conservation among its 646,000 employees in its 34,000 facilities and among its suppliers and partners in the mailing industry.<\/p>\n<p>Employees exhibited \u201cgreen\u201d initiatives, including the Postal Service\u2019s Green web site, a carbon and lifestyle calculator, an office supplies swap web site, energy-saving tips, and Cradle to Cradle-certified \u201cgreen\u201d packaging and shipping supplies.<\/p>\n<p>A small electronics recycling center was set up to enable employees to recycle cell phones, laptops, BlackBerry devices and MP3 players, with the goal of doubling the 6,000 pounds of materials recycled at last year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>Outside corporate headquarters, Potter contrasted the old \u2014 an antique delivery bicycle and a 1929 Model AA Ford delivery vehicle \u2014 with the new, four battery-powered vehicles from Chrysler\u2019s ENVI organization and a GM hydrogen fuel-cell truck.
