{"id":26161,"date":"2019-04-19T09:39:16","date_gmt":"2019-04-19T14:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=26161"},"modified":"2019-04-19T09:39:16","modified_gmt":"2019-04-19T14:39:16","slug":"postal-employees-recall-dog-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2019\/04\/19\/postal-employees-recall-dog-attacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Postal Employees Recall Dog Attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-thumbnail link-fullfeature\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-twentyfourteen-full-width wp-post-image alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DogBitesEmployees_large-story.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DogBitesEmployees_large-story.jpg 900w, https:\/\/link.usps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DogBitesEmployees_large-story-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/link.usps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DogBitesEmployees_large-story-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/link.usps.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/DogBitesEmployees_large-story-120x80.jpg 120w\" alt=\"Woman with nose scar speaks to TV news crew\" width=\"603\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<h6 class=\"link-caption\"><em>Lapeer, MI, Rural Carrier Debra Fritch, who was on the job when a dog bit her on the nose, recalls the experience during a TV news interview this week.<\/em><\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<p>USPS News Link &#8211; 4\/18\/19 &#8211; Derrin Tucker was delivering mail recently when a dog charged toward him.<\/p>\n<p>The Lubbock, TX, letter carrier remembered the safety training he received and placed his satchel between himself and the animal. \u201cI quickly tried to think of every dog bite prevention tip that would allow me to escape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The dog\u2019s owner soon arrived and restrained the animal, leaving Tucker feeling thankful that the defensive techniques he learned on the job helped him to protect himself.<\/p>\n<p>Tucker is one of several USPS employees who are sharing their stories during\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2019\/04\/12\/still-too-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Dog Bite Prevention Week<\/a><\/em>, an annual campaign that highlights\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2019\/04\/17\/pet-precautions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safety tips<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2019\/04\/15\/no-more-bites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">employee programs<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and an\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2019\/04\/16\/attack-stats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual ranking<\/a><\/em>\u00a0of the cities with the most attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Other employees who are speaking out include Westland, MI, Letter Carrier Katie Nelson, who was attacked while delivering mail to a home that was under renovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t even a door on the house to keep the dog contained,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Lapeer, MI, Rural Carrier Debra Fritch also shared her story, explaining how she required several surgeries after a dog bit her on the nose. \u201cI have one more surgery planned. I told my doctor I want a princess nose when it\u2019s all done,\u201d Fritch said.<\/p>\n<p>Customers are also recalling their experiences, including Oneal Colley, a woman who helped Detroit Letter Carrier Todd Bridges when he was attacked by a dog in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept thinking if I was on the ground like the letter carrier, I would want someone to help me.
