And as we moved closer and closer to today\u2019s ceremony, the excitement has continued to build,\u201d said Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale, who led the event.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as the \u201cPrince of Soul,\u201d Gaye helped shape the buoyant sound of the Motown record label in the 1960s with hits like \u201cAin\u2019t Nothing Like the Real Thing\u201d and \u201cToo Busy Thinking About My Baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later broadened the scope of R&amp;B music. Released in 1971, his expansive masterwork, \u201cWhat\u2019s Going On,\u201d is widely considered one of the greatest recordings in the history of American popular music.<\/p>\n<p>The stamp, which is part of the Music Icons series,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2019\/04\/02\/center-stage-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">features a portrait of Gaye<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1939-1984) inspired by historic photographs. The stamp is available at Post Offices and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.usps.com\/store\/product\/buy-stamps\/marvin-gaye-S_586104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">usps.com<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was held on the 80th anniversary of Gaye\u2019s birth and featured speakers and musical performers who underscored his enduring legacy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Barksdale, participants included Smokey Robinson; Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records; Mary Wilson of the Supremes; Kadir Nelson, the stamp artist; singer Kenny Lattimore, who performed Gaye\u2019s hit \u201cGot to Give It Up;\u201d and members of the Gaye family, including son Marvin Gaye III, daughter Nona Gaye, sister Zeola Gaye and brother Antwaun Gay.<\/p>\n<p>Marvin Gaye III praised Nelson\u2019s artistry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBravo, man, for capturing my father\u2019s true essence,\u201d he said. \u201cIt immediately drew me in when I first saw it. My father would be so pleased as much or more than I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Marvin Gaye stamp is the ninth in the Music Icons series. The other honorees are Ray Charles, Lydia Mendoza, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2015\/08\/12\/rockin-rollout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elvis Presley<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2016\/03\/29\/all-that-jazz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Vaughan<\/a><\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.usps.com\/2018\/09\/11\/john-lennon-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Lennon<\/a><\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Said Barksdale: \u201cMarvin is still with us. His voice. His swag. His passion. His soul. All those wonderful things that made him the undisputed Prince of Soul.
