{"id":22475,"date":"2018-02-05T09:40:10","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T14:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=22475"},"modified":"2018-02-05T09:40:10","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T14:40:10","slug":"usps-recovers-customers-wwii-era-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2018\/02\/05\/usps-recovers-customers-wwii-era-mail\/","title":{"rendered":"USPS recovers customer\u2019s WWII-era mail"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"entry-title-full\">\u2018Oh my stars!\u2019<\/h1>\n<div class=\"link-subhead-full\"><strong><em>USPS recovers customer\u2019s WWII-era mail<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>USPS News Link &#8211; 2\/5\/18 &#8211; Calvin White was processing a tray of letters recently when he came across one that stood out from the rest because of its postmark date: 1943.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was part of a collection that also included a greeting card and several postcards, all addressed to members of the same family.<\/p>\n<p>White, a clerk at the Mail Recovery Center in Atlanta, realized the mailpieces probably held great sentimental value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters like that are part of a family\u2019s history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>White alerted Mail Recovery Supervisor Lawana Smith, who did some online sleuthing and tracked down one of the customers: Lucille Hilterbrand of Van Buren, MO.<\/p>\n<p>Smith called the 98-year-old Hilterbrand, who explained the mailpieces were written by her brother during the World War II era. She recently came across the keepsakes while cleaning her home and decided to put them in an envelope and mail them to another relative.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow the contents of the envelope become dislodged.
