{"id":19897,"date":"2017-06-17T09:37:54","date_gmt":"2017-06-17T14:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=19897"},"modified":"2017-06-17T09:38:16","modified_gmt":"2017-06-17T14:38:16","slug":"redesigned-heat-safety-tool-app-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2017\/06\/17\/redesigned-heat-safety-tool-app-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Redesigned Heat Safety Tool App Released May Help Letter Carriers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NALC\/OSHA\/NIOSH &#8211; 6\/16\/17 &#8211; The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health\u00a0(NIOSH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have collaborated to update OSHA\u2019s original Heat Safety Tool app for smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>The updated app, available for both<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=erg.com.nioshheatindex\">Android<\/a>\u00a0and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/osha-niosh-heat-safety-tool\/id1239425102?mt=8\">iPhone<\/a>, provides a clearer user interface while still providing the same information to help keep employees safe when working outdoors in hot weather.<\/p>\n<p>Extreme heat causes more deaths than any other weather-related hazard; each year<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/climateandhealth\/pubs\/extreme-heat-guidebook.pdf\">more than 65,000<\/a>\u00a0people seek medical treatment for extreme heat exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Letter carriers who are exposed to hot and humid conditions can use the app to check the heat index and learn about the relevant protective measures. With the OSHA-NIOSH Heat Safety Tool, you have vital safety information available whenever and wherever you need it &#8211; right on your mobile phone.<\/p>\n<p>The App allows workers and supervisors to calculate the heat index for their worksite, and, based on the heat index, displays a risk level to outdoor workers. Then, with a simple &#8220;click,&#8221; you can get reminders about the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to protect workers from heat-related illness-reminders about drinking enough fluids, scheduling rest breaks, planning for and knowing what to do in an emergency, adjusting work operations, gradually building up the workload for new workers, training on heat illness signs and symptoms, and monitoring each other for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.<\/p>\n<p>Working in full sunlight can increase heat index values by 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this in mind and plan additional precautions for working in these conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Tool is available in English and Spanish for Android and iPhone devices.
