A northwest Minnesota man who allegedly fired a rifle at a mail carrier and a sheriff\u2019s deputy is dead after a standoff with law enforcement late Monday morning.<\/p>\n

The Polk County sheriff\u2019s office was called to a home at about 11:21 a.m. when a rural mail carrier reported a rear window of his vehicle was shattered by gunfire, according to a sheriff\u2019s office press release.<\/p>\n

The mail carrier reported hearing two gunshots, and at least one struck his vehicle. The\u00a0Polk County deputy who responded\u00a0found\u00a0a man with a rifle, and the deputy called for backup. The man shot at the deputy and struck his vehicle, the sheriff\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

The man was later found dead outside his home, next to what the sheriff\u2019s office described as a high-powered rifle. The home is in Northland Township, about 16 miles from East Grand Forks.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office did not say how long after the initial shooting the man was found dead or how he died. At least one law enforcement officer returned fire during the incident, according to the press release. Read more from Twin Cities Pioneer Press <\/a><\/p>\n
