A former University of Alabama football player was sentenced in federal court Tuesday for stealing gift cards from the mail.<\/p>\n

Terrill Chatman, 48,\u00a0<\/span>pleaded guilty\u00a0<\/span>to one count of misappropriation of postal funds in November 2016.<\/p>\n

Chief U.S. District Judge Karon O. Bowdre sentenced Chatman to 12 months of probation. He was ordered to complete a financial literacy program during his probation, and barred from obtaining any new debts. Original charges by the Justice Dept. are below. Al.com<\/a><\/p>\n

United States Postal Service Employee Charged With Theft of Mail<\/h1>\n

BIRMINGHAM\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u2013 A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted a U.S. Postal Service employee for stealing gift cards from the mail, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Special Agent in Charge Maximo Eamiguel, Southern Area Field Office, United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.<\/p>\n

A two-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges\u00a0<\/span>TERRILL CHATMAN<\/strong>, 48, of Birmingham, with theft of mail by a Postal Service employee in September and October of 2015. According to the indictment, Terrill Chatman stole a $50 Publix gift card from the mail in Birmingham in September 2015, and the next month stole a $10 Walmart gift card.<\/p>\n

The maximum penalty for theft of mail by a Postal Service employee is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.\"\"<\/p>\n

The Postal Service Office of Inspector General investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Davis Barlow is prosecuting.<\/p>\n
