{"id":18408,"date":"2017-02-28T14:22:40","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=18408"},"modified":"2017-02-28T14:22:40","modified_gmt":"2017-02-28T19:22:40","slug":"attorney-general-jeff-sessions-announces-crime-reduction-and-public-safety-task-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2017\/02\/28\/attorney-general-jeff-sessions-announces-crime-reduction-and-public-safety-task-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Attorney General Jeff Sessions Announces Crime Reduction and Public Safety Task Force"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2\/28\/17 &#8211; Attorney General Jeff Sessions today announced the formation of the U.S. Department of Justice Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety.<\/p>\n<p>The Task Force was formed pursuant to the President\u2019s Executive Order on a Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety and will be chaired by the Deputy Attorney General. \u00a0Task Force members will be drawn from relevant Department components, and will include the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Director of the FBI and the Director of the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President issued an executive order, and I feel strongly about it,\u201d said Attorney General Sessions. \u00a0\u201cOn my first day in office, I called in the heads of the four major law enforcement agencies to discuss this plan. \u00a0Violent crime is on the rise, and we must always remember that crimes are committed against real people. \u00a0The creation of this task force is a critical step toward confronting this crisis vigorously, effectively and immediately.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18130\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Jeff-Sessions2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The task force is central to the Attorney General\u2019s commitment to combatting illegal immigration and violent crime, such as drug trafficking, gang violence and gun crimes, and to restoring public safety to all of the nation\u2019s communities.<\/p>\n<p>The task force is charged with developing strategies to reduce crime; identifying deficiencies in existing laws and policies that have made them less effective in reducing crime and proposing new legislation and policies to improve public safety and reduce crime; evaluating the availability and adequacy of crime-related data and identifying measures to improve it; and conducting any other relevant studies. \u00a0In conducting its work, the task force will consult with federal, state,\u00a0tribal\u00a0and local law enforcement, law enforcement organizations and victims\u2019 and community advocacy organizations, among others, to learn about successful local efforts and how they can best be supported at the federal level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than a hundred years the women and men of the FBI have worked to address threats to the American people,\u201d said Director James Comey of the FBI. \u00a0\u201cI look forward to continuing and building upon the great partnerships with our federal, state, local, and tribal counterparts on this initiative to combat violent crimes, gang activities and drug trafficking \u2013 all of which exact a high toll on our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety and well-being of our communities and our citizens is a vital part of our mission,\u201d said Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg of the DEA. \u00a0\u201cI look forward to our continued close work on the task force with our law enforcement partners on these crucial issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men and women of the United States Marshals Service stand ready to work with our federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement partners to remove the underlying criminal element from our communities,\u201d said Acting Director David L. Harlow of USMS. \u201cIn 2016, working with our task force partners, the USMS arrested over 106,000 violent fugitives.
