USPS News Link – 2\/27\/17 – The Postal Service held special dedication ceremonies for the Dorothy Height stamp and other observances throughout February to mark\u00a0<\/span>African-American History Month<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Height, who died in 2010,\u00a0<\/span>advocated for civil rights<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>for most of her life.<\/p>\n

Deputy Postmaster General Ronald Stroman\u00a0<\/span>dedicated<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>the stamp in Washington, DC, where he praised Height\u2019s work seeking equality for all.<\/p>\n

Greater Indiana District Manager Todd Hawkins dedicated the stamp in Indianapolis, where Myla Eldridge, the first African-American to serve as the Marion County Clerk, said Height paved the way for African-American women to take public office in the United States.<\/p>\n

Other stamp dedications included Height\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a Detroit dedication, Rev. Daniel Aldridge Jr., Height\u2019s nephew, said: \u201cEveryone loved Aunt Dorothy. I am proud my daughter is here to see her aunt being honored and hear of her enormous contributions to civil rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

Employees also created displays to honor African-American history.<\/p>\n

At the Dallas Processing and Distribution Center, Data Collection Technician Alzena Cobb used African-American memorabilia to create a \u201cmini museum\u201d to educate her co-workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day I come and look at it and I learn something new,\u201d said Dallas In-Plant Support Manager Karen Ware.<\/p>\n

Free Union, VA, Postmaster Evette Barton decorated the Post Office lobby with books, photos, apparel and other items from her personal collection, including framed artwork highlighting the\u00a0<\/span>Black Heritage<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>stamps.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to learn about events and people who allowed us the freedoms we enjoy today,\u201d said Barton.<\/p>\n
