Terrill Chatman, a former University of Alabama football player, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of misappropriation of postal funds.<\/p>\n

Chatman, 48, was a postal employee when he\u00a0stole two gift cards in the mail during September and October of 2015,\u00a0according to a joint statement\u00a0<\/span>by U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Special Agent in Charge Maximo Eamiguel, Southern Area Field Office, United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.<\/p>\n

BIRMINGHAM\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>– 8\/25\/16 –<\/span>\u00a0A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted a U.S. Postal Service employee for stealing gift cards from the mail, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Special Agent in Charge Maximo Eamiguel, Southern Area Field Office, United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.<\/p>\n

A two-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges\u00a0<\/span>TERRILL CHATMAN<\/strong>, 48, of Birmingham, with theft of mail by a Postal Service employee in September and October of 2015. According to the indictment, Terrill Chatman stole a $50 Publix gift card from the mail in Birmingham in September 2015, and the next month stole a $10 Walmart gift card.<\/p>\n

The maximum penalty for theft of mail by a Postal Service employee is five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.<\/p>\n

The Postal Service Office of Inspector General investigated the case, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Davis Barlow is prosecuting.<\/p>\n

An indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.<\/p>\n
