The president sits on the council as one of its vice presidents.<\/p>\n<p>During its sessions this week, the council also discussed a wide range of items related to the union movement, including plans for the labor movement\u2019s get-out-the-vote efforts in 2016 and beyond and the alarming number of anti-union battles taking place on around the country at the state level. The council also adopted a variety of policy statements; among them was one that concerns<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aflcio.org\/About\/Exec-Council\/EC-Statements\/The-Policy-Choices-We-Make-Now-Will-Help-Determine-the-Future-of-Work\" target=\"_blank\">the rising class of \u201con demand\u201d workers<\/a>, something that has the potential to threaten Postal Service jobs. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6576\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/2b-AFL-CIO-small.gif\" alt=\"2b-AFL-CIO-small\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the number of people who earn a majority of their income from work \u2018on demand\u2019 via digital platforms constitutes only a tiny slice of the workforce today, some predict this kind of work could become much more prevalent in the future,\u2019 the statement said. \u201cUnder current law, only workers who are defined as \u2018employees\u2019 are protected by the National Labor Relations Act. Encouraging on-demand companies to rely on a workforce of independent contractors who lack the rights and protections of employees is bad public policy, yet four states have passed legislation doing just that for Uber and Lyft drivers. Similar bills are pending in five other states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe there is no basis for the pessimistic view that good jobs soon will be a thing of the past,\u201d it said. \u201cEmployee status by itself is no guarantee of decent work, but the rights and protections of employee status long have been the foundation on which we strengthen our bargaining power.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aflcio.org\/About\/Exec-Council\/EC-Statements\/%28y%29\/2016\/%28m%29\/02\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read the council\u2019s other adopted policy statements.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Also at the meeting, the council declined to hold a vote on whether to endorse a presidential candidate in the 2016 election campaign.
