Bernie Sanders (I-VT) made a strong case for postal banking while appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show on Oct. 21. [Watch an excerpt<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ApYMVSCs_4\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, beginning at approximately 18:00.]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have millions and millions of low-income people who have to go to these payday lenders and pay outrageous interest rates,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re getting ripped off right and left. <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7249\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\" alt=\"1aa-APWU-small\" width=\"295\" height=\"182\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can have our Postal Service provide modest banking to low-income people where they can cash their checks and they can do banking.\u00a0 I think it will help the post office and it will help millions of low-income people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>APWU President Mark Dimondstein followed up on Sanders\u2019 point in an interview on the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7ApYMVSCs_4\" target=\"_blank\">Ed Schultz Show<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the following morning [beginning at approximately 16:58]. \u201cIt\u2019s another way that the Postal Service can fulfill its mission of weaving the people of the country as one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last\">Dimondstein noted that postal banking is \u201cjust an expansion of things we already do,\u201d and pointed out that \u201cover 30 percent of zip codes have no banks, but they have a post office.
