Comments must be submitted to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) by Sept. 21.<\/p>\n<p>If granted, the exemption would permit private, commercial drivers hauling mail for the U.S. Postal Service to operate trucks after more than 14 hours on duty following a break of less than 10-hours. <a href=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7249\" src=\"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1aa-APWU-small.gif\" alt=\"1aa-APWU-small\" width=\"295\" height=\"182\" style=\"border: none;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn exemption would pose a serious danger to motorists and pedestrians,\u201d said Michael O. Foster, director of the Motor Vehicle Service Craft. \u201cIt also would make it easier and cheaper for postal management to outsource U.S. Postal Service work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can do something about this,\u201d Foster added. \u201cI urge everyone who cares about safety on the road to submit a comment opposing the exemption.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regulations.gov\/#!documentDetail;D=FMCSA_FRDOC_0001-1774\">Click here<\/a> to make a comment.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starroutecontractors.org\/\">National Star Route Mail Contractors Association<\/a> (NSRMCA), the trade group seeking the exemption, represents approximately 17,000 small companies that transport mail for the Postal Service in trucks of various sizes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the Star Route companies are so small that their drivers are exempt from drug and alcohol tests that Postal Service drivers are required to take,\u201d Foster said. \u201cThis only magnifies the danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSave a life.
