Yesterday, August 14, 2015, social security turned 80 years old<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law on August 14, 1935. His signing statement read:<\/p>\n

We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.<\/em><\/p>\n

The SSA’s Commissioner released the following statement:<\/p>\n

I am thrilled to join our employees and stakeholders in celebrating Social Security\u2019s 80th anniversary. Eighty years ago, on August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt marked the signing of the Social Security Act into law with profound and relevant words:<\/em><\/p>\n

Today, a hope of many years standing is in large part fulfilled\u2026We have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.<\/em><\/p>\n

We continue to embody President Roosevelt’s vision of hope and protection for the most vulnerable members of the public. Our Vision 2025 provides a framework to shape the future of Social Security service delivery and outlines ways we can maintain clear communication with the public. By the way – if you retire from government service any social security benefit that you may be entitled to will be reduced because of WEP – Windfall Elimination Provision<\/a>. For years legislators have attempted to repeal WEP – but none have been successful. In my opinion WEP is EXTREMELY unfair to retired postal employees and SHOULD be abolished.
