{"id":11237,"date":"2015-06-11T15:44:09","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T20:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=11237"},"modified":"2015-06-11T15:44:09","modified_gmt":"2015-06-11T20:44:09","slug":"usps-achieving-sustainability-goals-report-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2015\/06\/11\/usps-achieving-sustainability-goals-report-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"USPS achieving sustainability goals, report shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Making progress<\/h1>\n<h2>USPS achieving sustainability goals, report shows<\/h2>\n<p><time class=\"pubdate\" datetime=\"2015-06-11T18:06:00.000Z\">USPS News Link &#8211;\u00a06\/11\/15<\/time><\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/liteblue.usps.gov\/news\/link\/2015\/06jun\/images\/news12s1.jpg\" alt=\"WaldorfPO\" width=\"220\" \/><\/div>\n<h6>Rural Carrier Lisa Molock turns off case<br \/>\nlights at the Waldorf, MD, Post Office,<br \/>\nwhich received a PMG Sustainability<br \/>\nExcellence Award last year.<\/h6>\n<p>The Postal Service is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving most other federal sustainability goals, according to new data.<\/p>\n<p>USPS has several goals under the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/about.usps.com\/what-we-are-doing\/green\/making-the-grade.htm\">Sustainability and Energy Scorecard<\/a><\/em>, an Office of Management and Budget initiative that directs agencies to publicly report their progress in becoming more environmentally responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The goals include reducing facility energy, water and vehicle petroleum usage between 20 percent and 30 percent within the next five years and cutting several types of greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The Postal Service is on track or ahead of schedule in each area, except for the petroleum usage goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud that we\u2019re making progress,\u201d said Chief Sustainability Officer Tom Day. \u201cHowever, reducing overall petroleum consumption continues to be a challenge because the total number of delivery points we must travel to serve our customers continues to grow each year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>USPS delivered to 153.9 million points in 2014, up about 1 million points from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/liteblue.usps.gov\/news\/link\/2015\/02feb\/news10s1.htm\">aging postal delivery fleet<\/a><\/em>, which is slated for replacement, also contributes to fuel inefficiency.<br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe Postal Service, a self-supporting organization, isn\u2019t required to meet the federal targets.
