{"id":10983,"date":"2015-05-19T15:18:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-19T20:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=10983"},"modified":"2015-05-19T15:18:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-19T20:18:00","slug":"nalc-fast-track-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2015\/05\/19\/nalc-fast-track-update\/","title":{"rendered":"NALC: Fast Track update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"meta\"><small><time datetime=\"2015-05-13\">May 13, 2015<\/time><\/small><\/div>\n<div class=\"text\">\n<p>Following lots of twists and turns in the debate over how to consider Trade Promotion Authority (TPA)\u2014better known as Fast Track\u2014and related bills (including Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) and Customs Enforcement), it seems that the Senate is off and running in how it will consider TPA and what it will take to get it across the finish line in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the bottom line: With Senate procedures being murky and confusing, NALC knows that beginning next week on Monday night (May 18), there will be a lot of activity on the Senate floor regarding consideration: debate, amendments and general confusion. It is expected that the Senate will resume consideration of the TPA and TAA, which will be linked together to achieve an expected 60-vote threshold, making passage in the chamber imminent.<\/p>\n<p>As you recall, the Obama administration is knee-deep in negotiations with Pacific countries over what\u2019s known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), as well as with European countries over the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).<\/p>\n<p>To secure these, Obama is calling on Congress to pass Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), also known as \u201cFast Track.\u201d If Fast Track passes, it means that when TPP and TTIP come up for a congressional vote, the two trade deals could only be voted up or down, without amendments.<\/p>\n<p>For more information regarding NALC\u2019s opposition to Fast Track,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nalc.org\/government-affairs\/legislative-updates\/fast-track-legislation-advances-in-house-and-senate-committees\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>.
