The event is free and open to the public. The public is asked to RSVP as soon as possible as seating is not guaranteed. Please RSVP at<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>usps.com\/mayaforever<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em>or by calling866-268-3243 before 5 p.m. ET April 3. Each RSVP is limited to two (2) seats. Doors open at 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Angelou fans are encouraged to share the news on social media using<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>#MayaForever.<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The Maya Angelou Forever stamps may be pre-ordered now at this<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/store.usps.com\/store\/browse\/uspsProductDetailMultiSkuDropDown.jsp?productId=S_472604\" target=\"_blank\"><em>link<\/em><\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>for delivery shortly after April 7.<\/p>\n<p>Also attending the ceremony will be Angelou\u2019s grandson Colin Johnson;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davis.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL)<\/a>;<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/soniasanchez.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>poet Sonia Sanchez<\/em><\/a>; author and journalist Sophia Nelson; Howard University English professor Eleanor Traylor; poet and civil rights activist Nikki Giovanni; civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton; and Atlanta-based artist<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rossinfineart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ross Rossin<\/a>,<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>whose portrait of Angelou was used for the stamp. The backstory on the portrait and the connection to Young and Winfrey can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/about.usps.com\/news\/national-releases\/2015\/pr15_015.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>. Melissa Harris-Perry will serve as master of ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>As an author, poet, actress, and champion of civil rights, Angelou (1928\u20132014) was one of the most dynamic voices in 20th-century American literature. The book, \u201cI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,\u201d an autobiographical account of her childhood, gained wide acclaim for its vivid depiction of African-American life in the South.<\/p>\n<p>The stamp showcases Rossin\u2019s 2013 4ft. by 4ft. oil-on-canvas portrait of Angelou. The large hyper-realistic painting is part of the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npg.si.edu\/maya.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery&#8217;s collection<\/em><\/a>, where it will be on display through Nov. 1.
