The \u201cstudy\u201d by Robert J. Shapiro was the subject of articles in the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/federal-eye\/wp\/2015\/03\/27\/does-the-u-s-postal-service-have-an-unfair-competitive-advantage\/?tid=hpModule_ba0d4c2a-86a2-11e2-9d71-f0feafdd1394&amp;hpid=z13\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2015\/03\/27\/us-postal-service\" target=\"_blank\">Fortune<\/a>,<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and was the centerpiece of a panel discussion at the well-known<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?325008-1\/discussion-future-us-postal-service\" target=\"_blank\">Brookings Institution<\/a><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>on March 25.<\/p>\n<p>The headline in Fortune was eye-catching, to say the least: \u2018American Taxpayers Give an $18 Billion Gift to the Post Office Every Year,\u2019 the Wall Street mouthpiece asserted.<\/p>\n<p>But so far, discussion of Shapiro\u2019s claims has omitted a crucial detail: The study was financed by United Parcel Service, the Postal Service\u2019s chief private-sector competitor and a long-time proponent of postal privatization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUPS has advocated privatization of the Postal Service for more than 30 years,\u201d said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. \u201cSo it\u2019s not surprising that the company would make these wild claims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s troubling, however, that the liberal Brookings Institution would feature Shapiro at an event that was promoted as a serious discussion of the future of the Postal Service without revealing that his research was provided by UPS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lesson there,\u201d Dimondstein added. \u201cPostal privatizers come from both major political parties.\u201d \u00a0Shapiro, who holds a Ph.D. from Harvard, runs Sonecon, Inc., a private economic consulting firm.
