{"id":10017,"date":"2015-02-09T12:29:29","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T17:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/?p=10017"},"modified":"2015-02-09T12:29:29","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T17:29:29","slug":"apwu-contract-campaign-ramps-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postalemployeenetwork.com\/news\/2015\/02\/09\/apwu-contract-campaign-ramps-up\/","title":{"rendered":"APWU: Contract Campaign Ramps Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-article-deck field-type-text field-label-hidden field-wrapper\"><strong>Town Hall Conference Call Feb. 17; Register by Feb. 16<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-wna-number field-type-text field-label-inline clearfix field-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"field-label\">APWU Web News Article<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body field\">\n<p><span class=\"news-date-inline\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/content-images\/Phone4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"149\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With contract negotiations set to begin on Feb. 19, APWU members across the country are busy preparing.<\/p>\n<p>At the national level, officers have been studying data, weighing input from union members, plotting strategy, and honing contract proposals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut to win a good contract this year, we will have to wage our fight very differently than we have in the past,\u201d said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile negotiations are going on at the bargaining table, we will have to demonstrate support from union members across the country, as well as from the people we serve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The APWU is inviting union members to participate in a live Town Hall Conference Call with President Dimondstein on Feb. 17, to discuss negotiations and how union members can join the fight. To take part, register<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/news\/web-news-article\/town-hall-conference-call-%E2%80%93-feb-17\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><em>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Participants will be able to select from four times. The call is expected to last approximately 35 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.apwu.org\/sites\/apwu\/files\/content-images\/Sticker%20-%20Good%20Service-Good%20Jobs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sticking with the Union<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Feb. 19, the opening day of negotiations, union members are urged to wear stickers and union caps, T-shirt and other gear as a show of solidarity. Stickers have been mailed to local and state presidents for distribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy wearing the sticker and union gear, you will visibly demonstrate that union members are involved, informed, united, and organized in our quest for a fair contract,\u201d Dimondstein said. \u201cTo win support, we will need the active involvement of all APWU members \u2013 not just stewards and officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Secretary-Treasurer Liz Powell said, \u201cWe also must make sure that we are united within our own ranks. We must make sure that more senior workers understand the importance of improving conditions for Postal Support Employees, and that new employees understand the importance of protecting retirement benefits. And we must strive together to end the three-tier pay structure that divides our workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>APWU retirees are also involved \u2013 planning tailgate parties and working to building public support for our efforts to save America\u2019s Postal Service. \u201cRetirees are providing information to their neighbors and to community organizations, informing them that securing a good contract for postal employees will mean better services and a better place to live,\u201d said Retirees Department Director Judy Beard.<\/p>\n<p>Many locals and state organizations have set up Contract Action Teams (CAT), which will assist the national APWU and local and state leaders in providing information to union members in break rooms and on bulletin boards throughout negotiations. For information about helping to set up a contract action team contact your local president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last\">&#8220;Every APWU member can \u2013 and should \u2013 get involved,&#8221; Dimondstein said. \u201cWe will ask all union members to speak out about the threat to the public Postal Service and how a contract that protects good jobs can also protect local post offices.
