LITTLE ROCK— 4/7/26 – Christopher Juan Sheard will spend the next 121 months in federal prison for the armed robbery of a postal employee. Jonathan D. Ross, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas, announced the sentence, which was handed down today by United States District Judge Lee P. Rudofsky.

A Superseding Information was filed on December 1, 2025, charging Sheard, 23, of Little Rock, with one count of armed robbery of a postal employee. Sheard pleaded guilty to the charge on December 1, 2025. Judge Rudofsky also sentenced Sheard to serve three years’ supervised release and ordered restitution in the amount of $44,614.67. There is no parole in the federal system.

An investigation revealed that on February 26, 2024, Sheard, armed with a loaded Glock 20, model Gen 5 firearm equipped with an extended magazine, robbed a postal carrier of their postal key. The postal carrier was delivering mail to an apartment complex when Sheard approached with his hand on a pistol which was tucked into his waistband. Subsequent to Sheard’s arrest while incarcerated, he made several phone calls to different individuals discussing selling the postal key for cash and the robbery. In one phone call, Sheard stated they need to “find [the postal employee] on Facebook and chop [the postal employee] down.”

Sheard’s criminal history includes convictions for possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver, felony fleeing, and obstruction of governmental operations.

This case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service with assistance from the Little Rock Police Department.

On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

U.S. Attorney Courcelle praised the work of the United States Postal Inspectors and the New Orleans Police Department for investigating this matter. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul J. Hubbell, I.V. of the Violent Crime Unit.

This case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service and Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Jamie L. Flowers, Jr. and Ellison C. Travis.

BOSTON – 2/13/26 – Two men were sentenced this week in federal court in Boston for fraudulently depositing checks stolen from the mail.

Imanol Rios-Franco, 26, of Canton, was sentenced by Senior District Court Judge Patti B. Saris on Feb. 10, 2026, to 35 months in federal prison, followed by one year of supervised release. Rios-Franco was also ordered to pay $12,528 in restitution. In November 2025, Rios-Franco pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to steal and possess stolen mail.

Brandon Baez, 23, of North Attleboro, was sentenced by Senior District Court Judge Patti B. Saris on Feb. 12, 2026, to two years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Baez was also ordered to pay $10,285 in restitution. In November 2025, Baez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to steal and possess stolen mail.

From at least June 2023 until February 2024, the defendants and their co-conspirators stole mail from USPS collection boxes, looking to steal checks. After they stole these checks, they washed the hand-written ink from the checks using commercially available chemicals. The checks were then re-issued to the co-conspirators or other bank accounts that they controlled. After the checks were fraudulently deposited, the defendants and their co-conspirators withdrew money from ATMs or bought money orders with those fraudulently obtained funds. A review of the co-conspirators’ cellphones revealed that they had collaborated to advance this criminal scheme.

United States Attorney Leah B. Foley; Thomas A. Greco, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Boston Field Division; and Nicholas Bucciarelli, Acting Inspector in Charge for the Boston Office of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service made the announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by the Boston and Wellesley Police Departments. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lucy Sun and Philip C. Cheng of the Criminal Division prosecuted the case.

This case is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative established by Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Through historic interagency collaboration, the HSTF directs the full might of United States law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting the full spectrum of crimes committed by these organizations, which have long fueled violence and instability within our borders. In performing this work, the HSTF places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children. The HSTF further utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove the most violent criminal aliens from the United States. HSTF Boston is comprised of agents and officers from HSI, FBI, DEA, ATF, USMS, IRS-CI, USPIS, DOL-OIG and DSS, as well as several state and local law enforcement agencies, with the prosecution being led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

OAKLAND — 2/9/26 – An Oakland man was sentenced today to five years in federal prison for robbing a postal carrier. U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín handed down the sentence.

Joseph Michael McBee, 30, was charged by criminal complaint on Oct. 28, 2024, and by information on July 1, 2025, with one count of robbery of a U.S. mail carrier. He pleaded guilty on Oct. 20, 2025.

According to the plea agreement, early on the morning of Oct. 10, 2023, McBee stole a 2015 Kia Soul parked on a residential street in Oakland. Later that morning, he arrived in the stolen Kia at a Toyota dealership in Daly City and assisted two others, Ebony Reeves and Felix Wilson, as they stole a 2023 Toyota Camry. Reeves was separately charged with receipt of stolen mail and Wilson was charged with aiding and abetting mail robbery; both have pleaded guilty.

All three then drove around San Francisco looking for a mail carrier to rob. At about 10:25 a.m., they spotted a U.S. mail truck and mail carrier. McBee exited the stolen Toyota and approached the victim mail carrier, demanding that the victim hand over his postal keys. When the victim refused, McBee pushed him to the ground and stole his wallet. The victim sustained bruising to both arms as a result of McBee’s assault. During the assault, mail trays containing over 500 pieces of mail were stolen. Afterwards, the three defendants drove to a gas station store in Oakland where McBee used the victim mail carrier’s credit card.

McBee was not arrested until Oct. 31, 2023, after he took law enforcement on an extensive and dangerous car chase and subsequent foot chase. When McBee was finally apprehended, he had a firearm and ammunition in his possession.

United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian and U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), San Francisco Division Inspector in Charge Stephen M. Sherwood made the announcement.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Martínez-Olguín also sentenced McBee to a three-year period of supervised release.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ivana Djak is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Jessie Chelsea and Amala James. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by USPIS.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — 2/2/26 – U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced today that a federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Jacob D. Ortiz, 34, of Buffalo, NY, with assaulting a federal employee, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Colleen M. McCarthy, who is handling the case, stated that according to the indictment and a previously filed complaint, on September 9, 2025, a United States Postal Service (USPS) Letter Carrier, dressed in full uniform, approached the mailbox of a residence on Columbus Avenue in South Buffalo. Ortiz exited the residence. The Letter Carrier believed he was a resident coming to get his mail. However, without warning or provocation, Ortiz lunged toward the Letter Carrier and began punching him in the face and head with his fists. The Letter Carrier suffered cuts, bumps and bruises to his face, behind his left ear, on the back of his head, on his left elbow and below his right knee.

The indictment is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service Boston Division, under the direction of Acting Inspector-in-Charge Nicholas J. Bucciarelli.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

BILLERICA – 1/23/26 – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and Billerica Chief of Police Roy Frost have announced that two juveniles have been arraigned in Lowell Juvenile Court for allegedly robbing a United States Postal Service mail carrier in Billerica using a bb gun that looked like a semiautomatic handgun. They are charged with armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon.

On November 12, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Billerica Police responded to a report of two males who had allegedly robbed a postal employee.

The investigation revealed that the two juveniles had traveled to Billerica from Lowell that morning by train, with the plan to rob a mail carrier. The suspects went to a neighborhood in the center of Billerica, allegedly located the victim and followed him for a short amount of time before attacking him. The suspects allegedly struck the victim in the face, and one of the suspects, while holding what appeared to be a handgun, demanded that the victim hand over a mailbox key. The victim complied, and the defendants fled from the area. Detectives later recovered the defendants’ outer clothing and the weapon in the area.

Through witness interviews, review of surveillance footage and the execution of numerous search warrants over the course of several months, detectives identified the two juvenile males involved. They are from Lowell, aged 14 and 15. The stolen mailbox key was recovered two months later.

Both defendants were released on personal recognizance with conditions to stay away from and have no contact with the victim, have no contact with each other and to not possess any dangerous weapons or firearms.

This case was investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the United State Postal Inspection Service, Massachusetts State Police assigned to USPIS, Billerica Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. The prosecutor assigned to this case is Timothy Andrea. The Victim Witness Advocate is Dar’ya Matkovska.

Memphis, TN – 1/13/26 – On January 9, 2026, a federal jury delivered a guilty verdict in the case of Marshun Lewis, 25, who was charged with committing a series of armed robberies of United States postal carriers in August 2023 and October, November, and December of 2024 in the Western District of Tennessee. Lewis faces a mandatory statutory minimum sentence of 28 years in federal prison based upon brandishing a firearm during each of the robberies. United States Attorney D. Michael Dunavant, for the Western District of Tennessee, announced the verdict today.

According to information presented in court, Lewis conducted a series of armed robberies of United States postal carriers as a masked gunman for the purpose of obtaining keys to unlock blue collection mailboxes throughout the city of Memphis. He used the keys to steal checks and money orders from the mail for use in committing bank fraud. He would alter the payee information on the checks and money orders for deposit into third party accounts for withdrawal. Investigators located his vehicle on surveillance video at the scene of the robberies. Postal Inspectors served a search warrant at his home and located stolen mail and the keychain for one of the stolen keys. Text messages located on his phone linked him to each of the robberies and several co-conspirators in the bank fraud scheme. Inspectors determined the total amount of stolen checks and money orders exceeded $940,000.

After a four-day trial, Lewis was convicted as charged of four counts of robbery, four counts of brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, one count of bank fraud, and one count of possession of stolen mail. Sentencing is set on April 10, 2026, before United States District Judge Thomas L. Parker.

There is no parole in the federal system.

U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant said, “This office takes very seriously our duty to protect the safety of United States Postal Service employees and the sanctity and security of the U.S. Mail. Armed robberies are brazen and disturbing acts of violence that terrorize our community and must be met with significant consequences. This dangerous offender has sown violence and greed, and as a result of this guilty verdict, he will now reap the full measure of consequences for his criminal conduct.”

“As the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service, the Postal Inspection Service prioritizes the safety of our employees,” said Atlanta Division Inspector in Charge Rodney Hopkins. “Make no mistake. We will use every resource available when our postal carriers are robbed. Postal carriers are an integral part of our communities, and the Inspection Service is committed to ensuring their safety, protecting the sanctity of the U.S. Mail, and safeguarding the public’s trust in the Postal Service by holding those that commit violent crimes and theft accountable for their actions. We extend our appreciation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and our law enforcement partners for their support in this case.”

This case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Assistant United States Attorneys Jennifer Musselwhite and William Bateman prosecuted this case on behalf of the United States.
