I deliver mail on a part-time basis. I am available six days a week to work 1 Saturday every other week unless I get extra work in between. I am required to furnish my own vehicle and gas, insurance, tires, etc and no health insurance is provided through the USPS. And in addition, my vehicle is not covered for collision insurance so it certainly can be difficult to rely on this type of occupation. What will the USPS do about subs when a regular carrier needs to be off for vacation, illness, etc. or has vehicle trouble because all subs have quit due to no Saturday delivery?

Herman I am a member of NALC as well and could not agree with you more. What about the environment? Is it really necessary to not only spin wheels with a 6 day delivery that is useless and wastes money, but it is also detrimental to the environment ? The union is only caring about dues. The fact is Sat. delivery is a double whammy. We have to work an unnecessary day and we will probably get a pay cut next time around. How will the union spin that ? We , as a nation , are a joke. We are the only country in the world that delivers mail on Saturday. Heck , even Canada has been 5 days for decades.

This guy was CFO from 1993-1998. Just how much has the economy, mail volume, technology and the Postal Service changed in the time he’s been gone?

Herman – what say we jusat go to working four ten hour days, talk about saving the old PO some money, and better for us still we can have three days off every week, lets go fishing !!!

james is right, Saturday is a waste, DO AWAY WITH SATURDAY,
and I belong to NALC. They are dead wrong and will hurt us all on this issue
I don’t want a pay cut to keep sat.

how many time have I heard ” if i am the carrier why can’t you ask me about things concerning my job. i should know it best wince I do it everyday”. yet I have heard so many related to the NALC saying don’t do away with saturday delivery to save jobs for its members. Let me tell you somtthing guy, it has never been smart to keep things the way they are just so everyone can have a job. These people manage everyday “why would they not know what is best for the Post Office”. You guys beter stop taking advantage of this cash cow and realize this is not about management vs craft this is about a changing world, economy and the way things are done. think about where your job will be if they convince someone to turn the PO into a private business.
