Federal postal inspectors are hunting for a gunman who attempted to rob a Westside Jacksonville, FL Post Office on Friday, terrorizing employees and a customer with a baby, a police report said.

The attack occurred about 6:15 p.m. at 7055 Blanding Boulevard, 45 minutes before the Post Office closed. The building is about a 1 1/2 miles north of Interstate 295.

The report gave this account of the attempted robbery:

A 42-year-old clerk working at the counter saw a man walk in the front door wearing a bandana below his eyes and holding his hands in his white hoodie. The man approached the counter, pulled a gun and demanded money.

The clerk hit the floor behind the counter and started screaming. She attempted to pull a large mail cart over her body to shield herself from the gunman, who kept demanding she get up and give him money. The gunman tried to pull the cart away from the clerk while pointing the gun at her, but she pulled back.

A fellow clerk waiting on a woman with her baby son heard the other clerk’s screams and looked up to see the gunman. The mother also spotted the gunman. The second clerk, a 50-year-old woman, told the mother to get down. The 29-year-old mother cowered over her son to protect him. The second clerk then snuck them into the back through an employee door.
