Following Congresswoman Stefanik’s Advocacy, USPS Will Open Temporary Post Office for Town of Wells

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY 21st District) today announced the United States Postal Service (USPS) is establishing a temporary mobile post office unit at the Wells Community Center parking lot. Stefanik has been advocating for the USPS to take action since the post office in Wells closed in May, forcing residents to make a 30-mile round trip every time they need to send or get their mail.

“For too long, residents of Wells and Hamilton County have been forced out of their way to access a post office, making it difficult to access prescriptions and forcing them to risk the treacherous weather of the Adirondacks,” Stefanik said. “I am glad USPS has responded to my requests, so residents of the North Country will be able to take part in this essential service. I will continue to press the U.S. Postmaster General to find a permanent solution, so no rural residents will be forced to face such a disservice.”

Since the beginning of this issue, Stefanik has been working closely with local and state leaders, to resolve this issue for her constituents In August, she urged USPS to find a viable temporary solution until the town of Wells’ post office could reopen.

At the Wells Community Center, residents will be able to pick up mail and access USPS’ standard retail services starting on Monday, August 23, 2021.
