Video: County in Indiana avoids legal fight with USPS over scales

INGLEFIELD, IN – Decades of local oversight of U.S. postal scales ended last week when Evansville-Vanderburgh Weights and Measures officials formally opted not to challenge the U.S. Postal Service’s newfound insistence on inspecting its own scales.

The potential legal conflict was precipitated by Inglefield Postmaster Bryan Oxley’s refusal to let two local inspectors conduct their annual front counter scale inspection and certification on Feb. 25. The testing with steel and cast iron weights is necessary, Weights and Measures officials said, to assure that postal customers are not charged for postage based on inaccurate measurements. But the Postal Service argued that federal law trumps state laws authorizing the inspections and prohibiting anyone from hindering or obstructing the work. Read more
