12.16.14 – Monday marks the busiest mailing day of the year for the U.S. Postal Service. It will process millions of packages coming into the system as people get their gifts and cards sent out in time for Christmas. The post office is also picking up mail from customers you might not expect, UPS and Fed-Ex.
It’s what’s known as a last mile delivery. Fed-Ex and UPS will get a package from a warehouse to your local post office, but then the post office will get it to your door. The postal service has had a contract in place with its competitors for the last couple of years. The goal is to increase its business by bringing more packages into the system. The more mail it gets, the less it has to rely on raising postage stamp prices to run its operation. Read more
