Former South Dakota APWU Treasurer Charged With Embezzlement

November 06, 2014 – The former treasurer for the South Dakota APWU, American Postal Workers Union, has been charged in federal court with embezzlement for a theft of more than $36,000 from the union.

Susan Marie Haugen, 55, was indicted on one count of embezzlement and two counts of theft of labor union assets for a series of transactions that took place between May of 2010 and March of 2014. dept-of-justice2

The grand jury accused Haugen of making more than $25,000 in unauthorized cash withdrawals from the APWU’s bank account and using the union’s credit and debit cards to spend another $11,000. All the money was used for personal expenses, the indictment says.

Each theft count is punishable by up to five years in prison.
