NALC: 6-day mail preserved in spending bill

A bipartisan omnibus spending bill released on Jan. 13 retained the language calling for six-day mail delivery service, language that has been part of such bills for more than 30 years. 3-NALC News Small

“We are grateful that Congress recognizes the value of Saturday delivery to millions of American businesses that rely on the most efficient last-mile delivery system in the world,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “As the economy recovers and e-commerce booms, the Postal Service has returned to operational profitability, which would be threatened by cutting the Saturday service on which millions of small businesses and residents rely. Letter carriers and other postal employees have sacrificed tremendously to help the Postal Service recover from the Great Recession and adapt to technological changes. This sacrifice helped the Postal Service realize an operating profit in 2013. We are pleased that Congress has rejected the elimination of Saturday delivery as counter-productive; now we call on it to enact reform that will allow the Postal Service to innovate and grow—without dismantling the retail, processing and delivery networks that make it a national treasure.”

  1. Thank you N.A.L.C for your dilegent, hard work on preserving 6 day delivery for our nation, saving letter carriers jobs. Now our mission should be to save letter carriers lives. Putting letter carriers in harms way should be vociferously, and aggresively, fought by the Unions, and rank and file alike. There is no reason why carriers should be out after dark. The Union’s position is that being out in the dark is not nessecarily unsafe. I happen to disagree with them, everyone in law inforcement knows that a criminals work is partly done with the cover of darkness, that’s why they usually what until dark to commit crimes. In this failing economy everyone who has a tangible product is a victim. There used to be a time when the Mailman was a sacred member of the community, but believe me those days have passed… He is now a victim also….

  2. Thank you Fredric Rolando for helping to preserve 6-day delivery! Although weekends off would be nice I understand the bigger picture of helping to keep letter carrier jobs for future generations. Again, thanks for all of your hard work.

  3. Well said Fred. Lets focus on the Prefunding Liabilty issue and Staffing issues for Carriers all across the Country.
