Wall Street Journal: The U.S. Postal Service proposed drastic changes to its operations Thursday, including cutting more than 150,000 jobs from its payroll, raising the price of a first-class stamp to 50 cents and extending delivery time for long-distance mail, as part of a plan to save $22 billion annually.
Without those changes and others–including likely ending Saturday delivery–the Postal Service projects to incur annual losses exceeding $18 billion by 2015, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe told members of Congress in a letter urging them to take swift action on proposed reforms.

The Post Office can save money starting by cracking down on obvious fraud caused by managers. For example in my Rocky Point NY 9 route office (8 routes, 1 aux) there are 2 managers (postmaster, supervisor). Problem is postmaster doesn’t consolidate or absorb the aux rt. into the next smallest rt. which is only 32 hours per week because of the knowledge if less than a 9 route office he loses his supervisor and getting rid of the her would mean he can no longer go home at noon every day.
The Post Office I work at has this scenario, it has eleven full time routes, one one hour route. Three full time clerks, and one PTF. One carrier on light duty for 20 years. The Postmaster and manager have taken over clerks duties. We use to do TACS,AMS,PFS, AND HOLD. Two clerks regularly work the window, but not at the same time. The managers also sort misdelivered mail to box section. They leave early(never an 8 hour day), and have a PTF CARRIER being a 204B at night to close and watch the two window clerks. He does clerk work and watch us close because he does not know what is entailed. Now we are being told we have too many clerks, oh by the way our PTF is being lent out sometimes. She says we have too many hours at the window and to use a 1260 to record minutes not waiting on customers. I hand in three cards a day. Am I missing something in this? Help me to understand this waste of money. I also want to know what the percentage of supervisors were light duty. Seems to me they should be investigated for fraud.
