USPS renews focus on employee engagement programs

To increase revenue: USPS renews focus on employee engagement programs

As the Postal Service continues to reduce costs, it also is focused on identifying new sources of revenue. Over the past 6 years, three successful programs — Customer Connect, Business Connect and Rural Reach — have contributed more than $3 billion in annualized revenue.

DPMG and COO Pat Donahoe says efforts by letter carriers, Postmasters, station and branch managers, and rural carriers are very impressive.

That’s especially true for the Customer Connect program, which uses the relationships letter carriers establish with customers to generate revenue. Earlier this month, the program reached a major milestone — $1 billion in sales since it began in 2004.

Business Connect for Postmasters and supervisors, and Rural Reach for rural carriers also have performed well, says Donahoe. But to maintain the momentum and continued success of all programs, Donahoe asks employees to refocus on lead submissions.

Encouraging employees to re-submit leads that did not close as a past sale, Donahoe points to many new product enhancements that have been introduced in recent years. These include flat-rate packaging, increased scanning visibility, online discounts and contract pricing.

Donahoe also asks Postmasters and station managers to share program information with employees, celebrate and recognize their achievements, and follow up on business leads in a timely fashion.

  1. The USPS has been primarily focused on cutting expenses for the past years. The revenue stream model is failing due to email, twitter, facebook, etc. The USPS leadership must develop new revenue streams and increase/hold the current revenues. If not, the USPS will continue to get smaller and earn smaller and smaller revenues. The current business model will only generate adequate revenues if the package/parcel business is expanded. The USPS must compete directly with UPS and FEDEX if it is to survive.

The USPS was offered the internet decades ago but didn’t think it was in their business line. Maybe now, an encrypted guaranteed secure internet service to serve national and international government, business, banking, and the public use is the future. If not serving modern communications needs, the USPS will eventually wither until its either gone or subsidized to serve only low density populated areas.

  2. I don’t know about other areas but we sent in bunches of leads when the program started. Still waiting for the first response from whoever gets the leads that they even contacted the prospective customer. This instills a definite lack of confidence in those responsible for this program, should they actually exist.

My business mantra is simple. Increase income, decrease expenses or make my life easier…….All else is bullshit.

  3. I think the customer connect is good thing. I am a letter carrier and union steward at the Downtown Station,Denver CO 80202.My fellow carriers in
other areas tell me that this program isn’t achievi.ng its real goals with later start times
