For those who do not work at USPS it may appear that the Postal Service is having a going out of business sale instead of a summer sale. The closure of branch after branch and office after office, and the consolidation of distribution centers across the nation seems to indicate that USPS isn’t only streamlining operations but shutting down operations.
Recent news from across the nation reads like a fire sale:
- Postal service may close 5 branches in Connecticut
- Mail-sorting operations to move off Staten Island, officials told
- Bay Ridge Post Office One of 18 That May Close in Brooklyn
- U.S. Postal Service targeting Jackson’s delivery and distribution center for review; could result in closure
The closure of post offices and USPS distribution centers has thousands of postal employees worried about their employment future with USPS – worried about the possibility of having to relocate – or concerned about whether or not they will be able to provide for their families.
USPS has been around for over 200 years and has provided this nation with service second to none, but business after business are moving from hard copy mail to digital correspondence. The economic downturn is forcing newspapers to go Internet based instead of your usual daily newspaper. People send emails and instant messages instead of writing letters. In fact, there is an entire generation that has probably never received a love letter through the Postal Service.
All of these issues seem to indicate that the U.S. Postal Service may be headed toward becoming obsolete in the near future.
Here’s a thought – our nations government seems to be buying banks, auto manufacturers, and, who knows, possibly even hospitals soon – it may be a good idea for our government to advance a hostile take-over of United Parcel Service (UPS) – and possibly FedEx as well, merge their offices and services with the older giant USPS, and not only save America’s postal service, but streamline this nations redundant delivery services at the same time.
Yes, I know this could probably never happen, but the results of such mergers could save billions of dollars in delivery cost, reduce delivery fees, save millions of gallons of fuel, and level the distribution and delivery playing field to one mega source.
Unions? Yes, they would remain intact but with changes. UPS employees would be represented by a Parcel and Package union, FedEx by their own union, and USPS unions would remain the same with minor changes. It may even be possible that each union could be managed under an executive union that would negotiate for all of the service unions as one.
Why wouldn’t it work? Our government and elected officials currently seem to be writing the rules as they move forward without even taking the time to read the laws that have been written and submitted to Congress. So, why couldn’t a plan such as this work? All they would need to do is write the rules as the plan moves forward.

I WORK FOR THE USPS FOR 15 YEARS NOW AND 15 YEARS TO GO BEFORE I RETIRE. THE USPS WILL NOT GO OUT OF BUSINESS ANYTIME SOO LIKE YOU HEAR ON THE NEWS IT IS JUST THAT THE USPS IS FINALLY TURNING IT SELF AROUND TO ADAPT TO FUTURE CHANGES ABD IT IS DOING THAT. WITHOUT THE HELP OF MR OBAMA, IT WILL SO START BUT IN THE END WE THE USPS WILL SURVIVE THIS RECESSION THAT FORMER PRES. BUSH STARTED 9 YEARS AGO. THE ARTICLE ABOVE SHOULD BE E-MAILED TO PRES. OBAMA AND LET HIM KNOW THAT WE THE USPS LETTER CARRIERS, CLERKS, MAIL HANDLERS, TRUCK DRIVERS, SUPERVISORS, MANAGERS, POSTAL INSPECTORS, AREA MANAGERS, POST MASTERS HAVE VOTED FOR PRES. OBAMA AND WITH OUR VOTE WE ONLU ASK THAT HE DOESN’T FORGET WHO HELP PUT HME IN OFF FOR A CHANGE. CHANGE WILL COME FOR ALL OF US AND IT WILL BE GOOD, BUT IT WILL BE SLOW AND WE WILL SEE IT TOGETHER…THE GOOD TIMES ARE COMING BACK WE JUST HAVE TO BE PATIENT. I SAY THIS BECAUSE I SEE THINGS DIFFERENT FROM MY POINT OF VIEW BEING OPTIMISTIC.
PEN Editor: PLEASE – do not post comments in all capital letters. Further posts in all caps will be deleted.
DUE TO THE ARTICLES I BEEN READING ON THE NRP ASESSEMENT, THE POSTAL SERVICE NEEDS TO TAKE CARE OF THERE INJURY EMPLOYEES. THE EMPLOYEES GOT HURT ON THE JOB. SOME MAY BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO THERE REGULAR ASSIGMENTS AFTER CARE, AND SOME MAY NOT EVER BE ABLE TO GO BACK DUE TO LONG CARE OF HEALTH ISSUES. IF THE POSTAL SERVICE WANTS THEM TO LEAVE, THEY NEED TO MAKE A SETTLEMENT OFFER OR FIND JOBS FOR THERE INJURY EMPLOYEESES. I WOULD SUBJUST THAT THE PEOPLE START A CLASS ACTION SUIT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Please – do not post using all capital letters.

the post office is actually downsizing and as it automates over the next two years, it will still be a viable tool for business and home customers. don’t forget, the USPS still delivers to each american household daily and there is hardley an american anywhere that doesn’t love getting “real mail” instead of vaporized e mails. as a matter of fact, most people don’t have time to grovel through worthless e mails, it is the stuff that comes in the mailbox that we all look forward to. as for parcels, the post office actually is cheaper than fedex and ups for costs when sending packages. i am surprised that few people even mention this fact. the post office will even pick up your packages which is nice as it wasn’t that long ago that the usps could care less about picking up a package from customers.
all in all, the USPS is a very important part of all of our lives. if that mailbox on my curb ever disappeared, it would be the end of a part of american life we all treasure and actually take for granted, until it was gone. let’s hope that never happens. gregg L- morrisville pa.
I think everyone’s comments here are valid and make a point, however, the real problem is “not” the economy. What has happened, as we all know, is that we are now in the “electronic age”, and millions of Americans are paying their bills “online”, using email instead of snail mail, which is naturally cutting back on the need for the use of the USPS. Now whether businesses will continue to think of the USPS “first” with their shipping needs, that’s a dicegame. Another reason which highly affects “delivery type” businesses, is the state of our entire nation when it comes to higher crime rates. It’s not big secret that people are isolating themselves more and more simply because of the increase of home burglaries, etc. Well, if you’re isolating yourself, best way to pay your bills is “electronically”. Best way to get something shipped, why stand at the post office if you can get most of it done “electronically”. I’m just saying.
You seem to be confusing “working” with “passing.” Yes the merger could
happen but could it work? Nothing the government manages works hence
the USPS going under. Duhhh!
One of our biggest problems is having to pay the 5 billion a year to fund our future retiree benefits. No other agency in the government has to do that. The goverment has about 50 – 60 billion of our overpayment into FERS, but will not account for it. Also we need to bring to light of how much the government uses the USPS for free. They have promised us to pay us but have paid very little or nothing at all. Congressman Isaa, I think is his name, wants to cut our pay by 35%, but this man makes almost 200k a yr and wants to cut our pay. What a jackass.
That’s BS.I hope they go out of business and rid the US of this scum. USPS sucks ad they wonder why they lose to fed ex
To Eugene Davis: What do you think of your President Obama now? It is now two years since you posted………..Change is not what you thought it would be! Obama has not been your Savior at all……..Has he? I wish you luck on your future retirement!
I don’t think the USPS will ever go out of business. Many people still don’t use digital to pay bills, etc. It’s not just the elders who can’t get computers, etc, it’s many of us who know how to use this digital equipment but know that it can vanish over night. We don’t trust digital. It’s not safe, nor is your information that is out there in cyberspace waiting to be captured by any hacker. I have stopped counting the number of times a computer has failed me, either hard drive crashes, RAM failure, or something else. (Dozens plus. I build computers.) I don’t use computers for anything important. I use hard copies. To be certain, for instance, that my will gets back to my attorney’s office, I will mail it. I will not trust digital delivery for this.
Just think of an EMP event, a nuclear explosion which destroys all electronic equipment. This is possible, if not very likely. With digital gone, how will people communicate then? How will you drive anyplace when your cars electronics are fried? You think the government hasn’t made plans for a digital wipeout event? Of course they have. They are not going to let physical delivery systems go defunct.
Not to pick on Eugene Davis and “Fighting For Your Rights”, but typing in all caps is the least of their problems. The number of typographical and grammatical errors in their comments is simply atrocious. Maybe the USPS would run more efficiently and be better able to adapt to current technological changes, if their employees could form a coherent, written sentence. I know some people think I am nitpicking and possibly elitist, but how are we supposed to compete in this era, when we lack basic skills. Normally an employer keeps the good employees and weeds out the under-performing ones, but the ever-powerful unions have over-played their hand and force the employer to keep both good and bad. Through this practice, unions are changing our culture so that aspiring to be the best is not a trait to shoot for.
Overzealous unions have enabled the workforce to keep piling on benefit and perks, which is great for the employees short-term, but can ruin an organization down the road. Don’t get me wrong, unions have their purpose, especially in the early days, with abysmal conditions in coal mines, meat packing plants, etc. Currently though, it seems like the union bosses are exercising a power grab by making union membership mandatory and bargaining for inflated benefits that just hinder the employer in the marketplace. The unionized employees get used to the perks and are told to go on strike if they don’t get what the union bosses extort out of management. It is ironic, today’s unions are about as detrimental to society as exploitative management was to workers in the past.
Okay it is also like this everyone with basic thoughts you don’t need to have a 187 for a IQ, It is businesses like ebay and half .com along with their other company that is also hurting everyone also, ebay has mailing deals that if a seller uses fedex and UPS also along with USPS that they can get money off their shipping…yes you can from all 3 now but has any one figured out that all these mailing deals that ebay is doing with everyone is really the problem here also with million of packages getting mailed out each year and millions of sellers getting money off their shipping by printing out mailing lables when all that money added up each year may come out to billions lost by these online auction places such as ebay…figure it out if they never had permission at all or it was taken away from them by USPS.
USPS would regain in a few years time billions of dollars they lost because of special deals me my self out of all my sales even on ebay and amazon were we moved to I mail the packages my self with USPS and never print out any mailing labels, I see as ebay should not be gaining any more then they should out of using USPS to gain more money I like to see the USPS make more money off of every package I bring to my local USPS office and when I leave that USPS office I feel really good that no online market place is getting any part of what the USPS should be getting.
What the USPS really needs to do is take away the printing rights to these auction and selling sites and let everyone that uses USPS know that for now on they have to pay at the front counter of a USPS office for their packages to be shipped out even if they don’t like it to bad I say if I can do it they can also. The Bottonline here is basic and easy for any one that runs things on a higher level in USPS is to say no more printing of labels or special shipping deals for online auction sites or the online retailor then USPS would have enough money to keep going and become stronger then FedeX and UPS then USPS can think about becoming more strong and over take UPS position in delivering package all over the world and do it like UPS where the packages stay in the hands of USPS all the way to the door of some one that even lives in Japan by hiring USPS workers in every country around the world…nothing like becoming top dog don’t you think???
My idea will work but they need to be fully applied asap by the men and women that are at the top of USPS our USPS may fail and I for one that is a true american can not and will not want to see USPS get smaller if no one does the things I just talked about yes USPS will not only lose more money more jobs and maybe the chance of making millions more but will also lose its honor and its position as being a american ICON! and a legend for the future.
I want to see my USPS that I grow up with become a mighty giant all over the world In shipping and Mailing, Please some one take my Idea to the higher up people in USPS and ask them to adapt these ideas of mine they will work but if they do not the companies that are using USPS to gain more money and business will only be laughing at you all in the long run like the CEO of ebay which he must be doing all ready I bet every day because it puts more money in his pocket also not your pockets….believe me he is not only using USPS as a sucker but also others that do all the real work at USPS all over the United States…nothing like getting sucker bunched when your back is turned by a white collar punk as we call that type in the retail business.

Once technology takes root, you will see old technology rapidly disappear. Look at this way, the post office has managed to stay revelant for 20 years after the internet was introduced. I predict you will see a rapid decline that many in the post office cannot imagine. Be prepared not to be working for the post office by 2017. That’s all
To my dear coworkers of the USPS,
I think that it’s important to remember that the US Postal Service was created 200 years ago along with the US Constitution to provide a nonprofit service to our public. We are not a business set up to make a profit!!!!! Though the USPS has a beautiful infrastructure that BIG BUSINESS would love to grab onto and corporate greed has discovered that the USPS could be a trillion dollar business. Privatization has been in BIG BUSINESS pockets for many years.
Who is BIG BUSINESS…. another topic but check out the Illuninati, 33rd Degree Masons and Skull and Bones at Yale University. These organizations control world affairs.
