Edward Daniel
Retired OWCP Claims Examiner
See Contact Information at Right Column

Edward L. Daniel was born 1943 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland where he entered the U.S. Army in October 1966. He departed the U.S. Army after completing two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and almost eight years of military service obtaining the rank of Captain in Field Artillery. After leaving military service in 1973 he returned to college on the GI Bill and earned a bachelors Degree of Business Administration from Texas Christian University in 1977.

Following his graduation, Edward was hired as an OWCP Claims Examiner (GS-0991-05), Region 6, ESA, in September of 1977. In September of 1982 his technical skills were recognized through appointment to the Quality Control Unit. It was Edward’s responsibility to ensure that all aspects of the agency’s activities were of high quality and to recommend training and remedial action when appropriate.

In January of 1985, Edward served as the Office Congressional Liaison. His expertise in the worker’s compensation field combined with his inherent grasp of diplomacy provided exceptional service to the congressional delegation of the region.

In April of 1991, Edward was promoted to Claims Manager. Two years later he assumed management of the experimental Vocational Rehab/Claims Unit. His oversight and direction of this group resulted in the successful rehabilitation of over 200 injured federal workers. From 1994 through his retirement in 1997, Edward was involved in the implementation of a special pilot project that focused on specialization of claims functions in an effort to make the adjudication process more efficient.

In 1997, utilizing his computer skills, Edward devoted countless hours of his personal time to develop and implement two invaluable spreadsheet programs. The programs saved management many hours of labor-intensive calculations and manual tracking.

The Department of Labor has benefited from Edward’s twenty years with this agency. He brought with him the skills and abilities to direct and coach coworkers into achieving more as a team rather than focusing on individual accomplishments. Edward’s technical expertise was recognized through promotion from an entry-level Claims Examiner to a valued member of the Office of Worker’s Compensation Management team. Always in tune with his ever-changing environment, Edward has consistently volunteered to pioneer new alternatives in the way business is conducted...whether it has been a new theory on management style or in cutting-edge computer technology.
